Nokia and Our Employees in the Community

In our business, we are already using our strengths - connecting and communicating - to help make a difference in society. But businesses can only succeed in societies that prosper, so we also need to be concerned with the quality of life in the communities where we live and work.

As our Code of Conduct states, our goal is to be active as good community Members wherever we operate - both as a company and as individuals - as responsible and contributing members of society.

Nokia Helping Hands is part of reaching out to the community. It is also part of creating a balance between our personal convictions and our professional lives.

Nokia Volunteers Enjoy Children’s Day with Orphans
June 2, 2007 would be a special day for the homeless kids from Zhaoxian County Orphanage, Hebei Province, because they were invited to Beijing to enjoy a colorful Children’s Day with the Nokia volunteers. Mr. Colin Giles, President of Nokia (China), participated in the activity with his daughter. For six consecutive years, Nokia (China) has been devoted to helping orphans in various ways.
There are more than 30 orphans of different ages in Zhaoxian County Orphanage. Though without parents, the orphans are all very healthy and learn in local schools. From the day they were sent to the orphanage, they hardly had chance to go out. So they look forward to seeing the world outside and they are eager for care by others.

On the early morning of June 2, 93 Nokia volunteers come to the Elk Park of Daxing District, Beijing, to join the kids there. After a short period to know each other, the 33 volunteers and their families adopted the orphans, each orphan for each family. The kids and the volunteers formed temporary families. Mr. Colin Giles and his daughter, as well as Ms. Hera siu, Vice President of Nokia (China), also adopted one orphan each.

The happy trip began. At first, Nokia volunteers handed the books, stationeries, clothes, home appliances and beddings donated by Nokia employees, as well as the kids’ one-year school expenses to the Orphanage. Then the kids played games on environmental protection under the guidance of Nokia’s environment ambassador. Involved in the games, the kids learned so much on environmental protection. The interesting class and interactive activity eliminated the alienation between the kids and the volunteers. And the kids come to know that everyone has the duty to protect the environment. In addition, the kids looked around the well-known wild animal base-Elk Park.

After that, they came to the Tian’anmen Square. The grand building had long been the dream of the kids. Standing in front of it, the kids were quite exited, as they could only see it in books or on TV before. Then the temporary families had lunch with all the kids. The kids were all very happy, as this might be their first time to have dinner with “parents”, “brothers” and “sisters”. Seeing the kids smiling merrily, their “parents” were very happy. In the afternoon, they came to the zoo and aquarium. The magic nature and various creatures in all shapes excited the kids for a second time. Nokia volunteers spent a unique day with the kids. When it’s time to say goodbye, they lingered on and appointed to see each other the next year.

Mr. Colin Giles said, “As a responsible multinational, Nokia has long been attaching importance to public welfare and the growth of teenagers. Nokia will not only make its contribution for the local economy development in export, employment, taxation, but in public welfare to become an excellent Chinese corporate citizen. Teenagers are the future of the country, but the kids from orphanage lack love and care from their parents. What we did today means to call for more care from the society to love the kids and warm their hearts, and this is also what we should do as a corporate citizen.”

Nokia volunteers indicate that the orphans need love and recognition from the society to grow healthily. We feel very happy about what we did for them today and we had a good time, as we learned their conditions and demand.

One kid from the Zhaoxian County Orphanage said, “I wish I can see Tian’anmen Square and go to the zoo in Beijing when I grow up. Today, my dream comes true when I enjoy the happiest day with Nokia’s uncles and aunts. I’m so happy that I will write down what I experienced today. I will study harder later on to live up to the expectation of those who love me.”
